BRAZIL

Brazil follows a birthright citizenship system known as “jus soli,” which means that in most cases, any child born on Brazilian territory automatically receives Brazilian citizenship, regardless of the nationality of the parents, except in cases involving foreign diplomats. While the child becomes a Brazilian citizen at birth and is eligible for a Brazilian passport, the parents do not automatically receive citizenship or passports immediately. However, having a Brazilian child can allow foreign parents to apply for permanent residency in Brazil and may significantly shorten the naturalization process, with some cases allowing eligibility for Brazilian citizenship after only one year of residency. Once naturalized, parents can then apply for Brazilian passports as well. Brazil also permits dual citizenship in many situations, depending on the laws of the individual’s original country.
